Superb fix. This turned my day around....I'm glad I didn't pursue the MS option. Yours was straightforward and worked perfectly. I did not overwrite the defaul user setting, however.... My compliments. You are a PC God in my book.

This qualifies easily as the biggest known Windows bullshit annoyance ever. The Nvidia IDE drivers were bad enough, but crap like this that continues to plague Windows systems substantiates the fact that Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ!

Had to resort to this on a pal's Compax NX9010. Option 'A' worked fine. I initially tried "Last Known Good Configuration" but that just produced the original error message, so ran chkdsk and fixboot as instructed, typed exit to restart and WinXP Pro booted up without even giving me the chance to do step 13! Thanks, excellent

This site saved our small business several hundred dollars! I'll definitely refer to this site again for any future problems I may encounter! Thank you! Silver Sin

Thankyou so much for this article! I found the same microsoft article that you have based this on, it was very complex and confusing. Thankyou for simplifying my troubles and helping me fix my laptop! I did have backups but it is always frustrating having to reinstall everything. Thankyou for showing me how to fix it without a reinstall. Cheers Drew

I do not have McAfee or AOL Security Edition installed. As mentioned earlier, I have Windows Xp and when I boot, it gets past the startup screen, but then stops at a plain blue screen. The cursor is visible, but none of the screen icons, such as the harddrive or workfolders are. I can't therefore access any work or applications! Help. Never had this problem before. I also forgot to mention that my screen saver comes on in 5 minutes which makes it even stranger. As soon as I touch my mouse, the screensaver goes off and I'm back to the BSOD.

Great fix! I tried the Microsoft route described on Daniweb and got 2/3 the way through copying and deleting the first batch of files and it couldn't find the last 3rd to copy. I tried your method and am happily on my way to backing up data. It appeas there is something else wrong with PC - runs extremely slow.

Great work. It took some initial difficulty, but I was able to fix my system, with no reprocussions (that I know of). Thank you so much. However, as a side note, check the black screen pictures. They're some spaces they forgot to add in, such as: cd restore is listed as- cd_respo~1 however, you need to type in- cd _respo~1 other than that, this article is so much help. Once again, thank you.
