Not a lot of people use faxes anymore however the ones that do can avoid buying a fax machine by using the Windows XP software Fax Console. Besides using a dial-up modem to connect to the Internet we can also setup the modem to send or receive faxes.

To get started we first need to make sure the telephone line is properly connected to the computer and that there is no line noise. If you have a DSL connection you have to make sure the wire that goes to the fax is connected to a filter just like the phone. If your telephone company is using VOIP your faxing will not be very accurate and it will fail a lot of times so if you want to use faxing you might want to consider a regular phone company.

The phone line must be plugged into the Line jack of the modem. You can also connect a phone into the modem's phone jack to verify that you have a tone.

Now that we've cleared the physical aspect of the problem we can move to the software settings. To install the faxing components we have to:

1. Go to Start, choose Run and type Control Printers (This should bring up the Printers and Faxes Control Panel)
2. On the menu click File and choose Set Up Faxing:

This action should launch the System Setup. If during the installation you are being asked for the Windows XP cd insert it or if you don't have one you change the location of the instalation files to c:\i386. After the installation completes you will be able to notice a new icon called fax in the Printers and Faxes window. You can now double click on it to make the initial settings to your fax.

First window is just the Welcome Screen of the wizard:

On the next window we can setup the the sender information.

Then we're being asked if we want the fax to send or receive faxes.Very important! The Fax is not setup for receiving by default.

This is how your fax will identify itself to the recipient.

This is how your computer will identify itself to the person that sends you a fax.

It's now time to specify what do you want to do with the incoming faxes. They can be stored in a directory and/or automatically printed. Both options are disabled by default.

Click finish to confirm the settings and your fax is ready to use!
