The amount of programs that are loaded during startup can be controlled with an utility called msconfig or the system configuration utility. Before we launch this utility we should take some extra precautions though.
The cleanup process should be executed in safe mode. If there is a virus running in the memory and it will detect that you are trying to get rid of it by removing it from the startup entries and it will fight back. The safe mode is a special diagnostic mode of windows where all 3rd party startup entries are bypassed.
To get into safe mode :
1. Shut down the computer and as soon as you turn it back on start hitting the F8 key every 1/2 second. That will get you to a Windows Advanced Options Menu.
2. Choose Safe Mode in the list and hit .Select your operating system and hit .
3. After a while you will get to the Windows Login Screen. Choose your user account in the list. You will see an Administrator account that maybe you haven't seen before. Ignore it. Cleaning the Administrator account will not fully clean up the startup entries for yourself and your user account is computer administrator anyway.
4. If you don't see your user account press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice to bring up the classic windows logon screen. Key in your user name and password if you have it and click ok.
5. After you login a window will pop-up saying that Windows is running in safe mode. Click Yes to continue.
