Ad-Aware is by far the most used antispyware scanner. Although not the most powerful and comprehensive, it is the fastest, the most easy to use, and it's completely free. For light spyware infections (not our case) it is the most recommended. As a matter of fact Ad-Aware is the first antispyware program ever made.
Ad-Aware can be downloaded from Download.com at this location: ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/ aawsepersonal.exe. This location can be reached by going to the following address: www.tinyurl.com/3lqac. Here are the steps for installing Ad-Aware.
1. In the task manager click File/New Task
2. Type www.tinyurl.com/3lqac and click OK
3. This action will start a download. You will be asked what do you want to do with the file. Choose Run or Open.
4. After the file finished downloading if you are being asked if you want to run this file choose Run.
5. Click Next, check I agree, and click Next until you get to Finish.
6. On the Finish screen uncheck Perform full system scan and Open the help file now. Make sure that Update definition file now is checked though
7. That installs Ad-Aware. You will be presented with the Ad-Aware startup screen
8. Click Start on the right at the bottom. Make sure Perform smart system scan has a dot. The Smart System Scan is faster and more efficient. A full system scan will scan the whole hard drive but this is not completely necessary . The items that are missed by a smart system scan will not affect the computer unless you doule click them.
9. Click Next. The scan will start.
10. After the scan is finished you will see a red exclamation mark blinking. Click Next
11. You will be presented a list of all the bad items that were found.
12. Right click on the first item in the list and in the drop down menu choose Select All Objects. Now all the items in the list will be checked.
13. Click Next and confirm that you want to delete everything.
14. You will be taken back to the first window.

Now let's see what happened on our infected system. You will notice that during the scan the spyware that was running in safe mode launched a pop-up about smileys. Ad-Aware found more than 850 spyware items installed. That's how bad we infected this system.
